Note:

James D. Phelan (born April 23, 1821 in County Laois, Ireland; died December 23, 1892 in San Francisco, California) arrived in San Francisco in 1849. With his brother, Michael, who arrived in San Francisco a few months earlier, he started the J. & M. Phelan trading company. In 1871, he switched careers from pioneer merchant to banking, becoming the first president of the First National Bank of San Francisco. He also helped organize the Firemans Fund and other insurance companies, and a company to dredge the Panama Canal. In 1859, he was married to Alice Mulhall Kelly (1827-1900) and they lived in San Francisco where their three children (Alice J. Sullivan (1860-1912), James Duval Phelan (1861-1930), and Mary Louise Phelan (1863-1933)) were born.
